Trek to the foot of Everest in Tibet and even ascend Lhakpa Ri if you choose

 

Lhakpa Ri is just the right distance from Everest as one is allowed magnificent views and experiences of the world's highest mountain while not being too close for comfort. This stunning peak divides the upper East Rongbuk Glacier and upper Kharta Glacier. After many failed attempts Bill Tilman first ascended Lhakpa Ri during the Everest renaissance of 1936. It was later tackled in 1988 and 1991. All those who have successfully reached the peak have gone both physically and mentally prepared. However, in the end you are left with an experience that will last the rest of your life. It is not a technically challenging mountain and can be ascended by any who is fit, acclimatized, and motivated.

 

In our trek we will use the same route as previous ascents. Along the way to the summit there will be many chances to practice basic snow and ice travel. All safety precautions will be taken as you climb the exposed yet simple peak. Once you reach the top you will be provided views, which rival any of the worlds tallest mountains. Mountains ranging from Everest to the little known peaks of Shartse and Pethangtse come into perfect view. It is hard to even grasp the immensity of the Tibetan Plateau as you stare into hundreds of miles of some of the world's most majestic scenery. Upon your arrival in Kathmandu our friendly staff will meet you and accompany you to your first rate hotel. There are many sights to see in this ancient Buddhist and Hindu town. It is intriguing to explore how ancient culture has mixed with modern development. You can explore the city on your own or even have a guide accompany you.

 

Relax and take in the many attractions to be found in Kathmandu while your guides sort out all the expedition paper work. You can see everything form crowded markets to ancient Buddhist and Hindu sites. The locals and many travelers are extremely friendly.

 

Today is another free day in Kathmandu as your Tibetan visas are arranged. You can simply relax, see more of the city, or hire any last minute equipment you may need.

 

The stunning one-hour flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa allows for views of nearly the entire Himalayan range. Relax and take in your first sites of the mighty Everest and surrounding peaks. Once in Lhasa we will stay in any 3 star hotels with good facility.

 

Haven't you always dreamed of visiting the ancient Tibetan monasteries? Our knowledgeable English-speaking guide will show you everything there is to see in some of these renowned sights. First off we will explore the beautifully preserved Sera Monastery. Many of the pictures you see of Tibet are of these buildings with their white washed walls and golden roofs. To this day several hundred monks live and study in this architecture. The afternoon will be spent exploring the Jokhang temple and Norbulingka. The Norbunglinka is another astounding piece of architecture and was once the summer palace of the Dalai Lama. Jokhang Temple will provide you one of your first sights of devout Tibetans, as hundreds visit this sacred shrine each day. The central market of Lhasa, the Barkor, surrounds the Jokhang Temple. In these cobbled streets you can experience more Tibetan culture and even purchase some amazing crafts.

 

In the morning we will depart from Lhasa and travel in chartered buses along the Friendship highway. Numerous passes, such as Khambo La and Kharo La, provide wondrous views of the Himalayan range. A colossal glacier rises nearly straight up from the road as we pas Kharo La. The drive is no daunting task as we pass through many more beautiful Tibetan valleys and quiet villages along the way. Our final destination is another first class hotel in Gyantse. We will even get a chance to see the renowned kumbun stupa in Gyantse.

 

We continue on with a short drive to Shigatse, the second largest city in Tibet. Not a minute is wasted as we have a full afternoon of exploring the local markets and monasteries. It is very intriguing to see how ancient Tibetan culture compares to the modern day culture we will experience. There are endless amounts of sights, both modern and ancient, to see around this city. Another nice yet simpler hotel will be our accommodation for the night.

 

Prepare for a long day as we travel from Shigatse to Xegar. Along the way we see the historic Sakya monastery, which was once housed the rulers of Tibet from 1200 to 1350 AD. Two more high passes will also be experienced along the way. Unfortunately, we will stay in a somewhat trashy hotel for the night. We have no choice, as it is the only hotel within 200 km.

 

During our tenth day we leave the buses and enter somewhat rugged trucks. Through the Rongbuk valley we travel to Everest base camp. We get our first real views of Everest and other majestic peaks as we cross the Pand La pass.

 

Four days will be spent resting at the Everest base camp and properly acclimatizing. It is important we take every safety precaution necessary before beginning our ascent. However, numerous day trips will be taken. One day we will hike six hours to get great views of the North face of Everest. Another day trip can also be made to the nearby Rongbuk Monastery.

 

On our fifteenth day we will load the yaks and depart from the first base camp. Our night will be spent at an attractive campsite. It is our last night before moving on the ice, people also call it Camp I.

 

With the assistance of the yaks we will move on to Base camp 2. En route we will walk along the so-called "Miracle Highway". This narrow band of moraine goes through the middle of the east Rongbuk glacier. We will be surrounded by towering ice on both sides. This "Miracle Highway" leads us right to access to the very heart of Everest. Base camp 2 is an uncomfortable yet beautiful spot as it is nestled under the confluence of two towering glaciers.

 

Once more we will travel with yaks as we finally move to base camp 3. Once we get close our yaks will leave us as we move on with only a daypack. Do not try to overload yourself at this point, as it is very hard to travel on with heavy weight. It is very important to bring only what you need.

 

The next six days will be spent both acclimatizing and trekking on to a height of 6,400 meters. The trip will then be divided into three groups based on skill level. There will be numerous opportunities for participants of all skill levels. Those who take less risks can still trek to high and emote passes, which provide stunning views of Everest and the surrounding peaks. The majority of the group will move on to summit Lhakpa Ri. It is very flexible, but we hope participants will summit Lhakpa Ri on two or three at this base camp. It is a six-hour trip to reach the summit and return. Food, fuel, a tent, and possibly a sherpa will stay at the camp the entire time. If necessary it is possible to travel back to base camp one in a single day.

 

After our mission we will descend back to Base Camp

 

Today will be spent packing and preparing for our return journey.

 

After an early start we will drive back over the Pang La pass and end in the old town of Tingri. This ancient Tibetan town provides both history and wondrous views. Camp will be set up just outside of town.

 

Another very early start will be necessary as we drive across much of the Tibetan Plateau. We will cross our last pass of Lalung La and then travel back down through the Nepalese border. Our Nepalese bus will return us to Kathmandu for the end of our journey.

 

Most people spend these two days basking in the first showers and excellent meals they have had in weeks. Relax and enjoy Kathmandu!

 

Today we will go to the Kathmandu airport and end our wondrous journey. This is a sad day for many. However, the memories will last for a lifetime.
